Just Go With It


The joy of learning to let go and surrender.

I’d been contemplating writing a post on the topic of Surrender and the day I was planning to write it was Finley’s first full day in childcare. I mean I had BIG PLANS for my first uninterrupted days work in over a year. A whole day where I could plan my own time!

Ironically Finley got sick, so instead of a nice relaxed working day I’m writing this (speedily) with one eye on the baby monitor, hoping that I get at least another 20 minutes to myself.

You spend the best part of 30 (nearly 40) years doing whatever you like, whenever you like and then just like that your entire life changes.

Even sleep, a fundamental part of life, is no longer guaranteed. To think you used to take for granted going to sleep and not waking up for seven hours.


This is where surrender comes in and in my case learning to just let go and surrender to whatever happens each day, has made me a million times happier than if I was stressing about what I had on my to-do list.

I’ve still been (perhaps naively) writing a weekly to-do list, but generally (and absolutely no exaggeration here) things take on average four or five weeks longer than they ‘should’ (or just than they would have done in the past).


Because actually these self-imposed deadlines are no longer the number one priority.


It’s the same with training. Sometimes the stars align and you have the time and energy for a really good training session. Sometimes you just have to take what you can get. All you can do is the best you can with the circumstances that you have.


So yes you may have lots of plans (training or otherwise) for your maternity leave which may/may materialise but instead of stressing about what you're not getting done, try to enjoy the opportunity to surrender to whatever happens that day. Maternity leave does not last forever and whilst it might take a little longer to get to where you want to be, but you’ll be much happier as a result.


So yes write the list and push when you can, then don't stress and surrender the rest.
